All-Time Cycling Ranking Countdown: 100 to 85

Time to reveal the final top-100 of the King of the Echelon All-Time Ranking. Find out which legends of professional cycling took spots 100 to 85. More to follow in the next weeks as we continue our countdown!

Andy Williams The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

If you prefer to skip the details behind the rider's points total, you can jump right into the ranking here. But what good is counting down without actually counting points? Don't worry, I did the counting already, but I let you take a look at the rider's achievements below. Only the races on which the King of the Echelon ranking is built, are listed. If you're curious about what these are and what the points schema is, you can find out in this blog post.

Please note this is the status on 31 December 2021.

After finishing 2nd to Eddy Merckx in the 1975 Ronde van Vlaanderen Frans Verbeeck spoke these legendary words about the Cannibal (jump to 2:40 in the clip below) :

It's incredible, Fred, how fast he (Merckx) rides. It's impossible to say... I've suffered "formidably" (sic). I have to say it like it is... He's riding 5km/h too fast for us.

Fred, the interviewer, is former world-class rider Fred De Bruyne (cfr below), a name that will pop up later in the ranking. Also, note that the 1975 Ronde van Vlaanderen ended with a local lap: when Merckx crosses the finish line, the riders in the back had just been lapped.

85. Fred DE BRUYNE (BEL) - 2260pts

Fred De Bruyne won the Challenge Desgrange-Colombo 3 consecutive times (1956-1958). The Challenge Desgrange-Colombo was a points competition of the most important one-day and stage races of the year. A precursor of the current World Tour, if you will. In 1959, this competition became the Superprestige Pernod, which existed until 1987. In 1988, the UCI introduced the World Cup, which, however, only consisted of one-day races.
